“Wind Warrior” –
a Direct Precursor of
Formula 40′s

Designed by Gino Morrelli as 48ft tube catamaran “White Knuckler”, Stephen after purchasing it, rigged it to be on full speed race mode which included the installation of the first wing mast on the US West Coast which meant importing its sails from France and renamed her “Wind Warrior”.

She went on racing extensively on the west coast both in the Los Angeles region and mostly on the challenging San Francisco Bay and the Farallons Islands. Stephen, Gino and surfing legend Mickey Munoz were the crew to bring her flying across the Pacific to Hawaii, to be First to Finish on the ’87 Transpac, 12 hours of 62ft Akiane, the first monohull to cross the Diamond Head buoy.

Her hulls molds were later on passed on to Randy Smyth who decided to shorten her stern for an even 40ft with which he won his first World Championship.
